For many centuries people were measuring their accomplishments in different ways. For some of them, fame and money were the measurement of their success. For some those were great spiritual accomplishments or, perhaps, great inventions that were to make peoples’ lives better. Our modern civilization owes a lot to those great people.
However, there are challenges in life of every person, since if there are no obstacles there personality just won’t form within the body. And for every person it is important to try hard to accomplish the goal and be strong in going that. Like Winston Churchill said: “Never give in, never, never, never, never…”
For me such challenge was a bit unusual. It is well known that paper cranes are a significant symbol for Chinese people and I’m not an exception. In fact this symbol has a special meaning for me. Paper crane is a symbol of hope that reminds us not to give up. I’ve learned it when I was only 4 years old.
It was my grandmother who taught me an important lesson about hope. She was very sick at that time. Our entire family was very depressed. So was I. But unlike all of us she was still trying to look happy despite the fact that she new she was going to die soon.
She was a real optimist and a strong person. One day she said to me that making a paper crane could bring her peace and relieve from sadness and despair at the last moments of her life. At once, I’ve started my attempts to make a paper crane for her. However, it proved to be too difficult for me and I failed again and again.
In a mean time my grandma passed away and I still didn’t manage to create a paper crane. Finally, I felt such a great despair that I was ready to give up. I was so disappointed with all my previous failures that I could hardly believe that I can success.
And than suddenly, the moment I was ready to give up I realized why my grandmother wanted me to make a paper crane. She new that it wasn’t easy, and she knew that it would take a lot of time and effort to learn how to do it. But she also knew that if I don’t give up and make a paper crane for her I would learn a very important lesson in my life.
When I realized that I knew that I’ll never give in and finally I had made a beautiful paper crane. Thanks to that paper crane I’ve found out how hard learning could be but that in the end of the day it was all worth it. I consider it as one of the most valuable lessons in my life. Thanks to my grandmother I’ve also learned how important it is to care about another person and what it takes to take every effort to make a person you love and care about happy. I’ve learned the meaning of support within the family and between friends.
Many years have passed, but still, when my family or friends need support or encouragement when they face some obstacles I’m giving them a paper crane. This little thing is just a symbol of hope, it’s a message that I’m trying to send them.
Life is full of obstacles and troubles. Life is never easy and in a way it is good, since if there were no troubles or hard times it would have taken all ‘living’ out of life. There are things that we can’t be responsible for, but we are always responsible for the way we react to these things. Trying hard is one of those responsibilities. Many prominent people applied these principles in their lives and succeeded thanks to them. That is why I love to address to personalities of Winston Churchill, Henry Ford, Tomas Edison and many others.
Henry Ford once said: If you think you can do it – you are right. If you think you can’t – you are right as well. Another example for me it Tomas Edison who after each failure said: I’ve just found another way not to create the light bulb. I think that is the attitude of really successful people and that is the attitude I’m trying to use in my own life.
